A young male snowy owl

This picture shows a young male snowy owl on Jones Beach in Wantagh, N.Y. on Long Island. Biologists say an increase in snowy owl sightings across northern states suggests that the arctic species is doing so well on its northern breeding ground that competition is driving the young ones south.
